YouTube has become a significant platform for sharing information on a global scale. Experts worldwide have been uploading authentic and engaging content related to their field for beginners to learn from. Tom Caravela is one of those content creators on YouTube educating Medical Science Liaisons through his content and podcast, “MSL Talk”. Tom is also a leading MSL recruiter as well as a Certified Speaker, Trainer and Coach in the pharmaceutical industry with 30 years of experience.
Helping others and being part of their career development can be quite rewarding. For Tom, the pharmaceutical industry was where his pursuit of assisting people began. He worked as a market expansion specialist and trainer at Abbott Laboratories for ten years, where he loved “helping people and developing others.” While doing his job, Tom developed an interest in the staffing business. He says, “I first learned the recruiting business from participating in many field expansions as a Sales Trainer.”
The fascinating aspect of playing the role of a recruiter who can be the stepping stone to a successful career for others motivated Tom to pursue it. His progressive career as a recruiter came to a halt when 911 hit. Tom suffered from a family loss that found him at a crossroads in his life and career. He explained that at that time he had an epiphany about his career and knew he had to do something special. With his many years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, He decided to launch a startup executive search firm geared towards field based representatives for pharma and biotech companies.
The Carolan Group came into existence in May 2002 and developed into a successful recruitment and executive search firm specifically for Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). When asked about his progress, Tom elaborated, “We have spent the last 20 years helping companies find top talent and build out MSL teams. I owe our success to my very talented and expert staff that has helped raise the standards of medical affairs recruitment for the pharmaceutical industry”.
Tom is a Certified Speaker, Trainer and Coach and is also the host of “MSL Talk”, a popular podcast that focuses on Medical Affairs and Medical Science Liaison-related information. He posts unique and engaging content on his social media platforms to aid in the career development efforts of his listeners. On MSL Talk, Tom discusses “All Things Field Medical”, as he says in his podcast intro. The episodes include MSL trends, industry news, statistics and hiring data, recruitment processes and criteria, career advice and development tips, and so much more. MSLs and Medical Affairs Professionals all over the world have discovered his podcast to be highly effective for their career development and progression.
One of the MSL listeners has expressed their gratitude to Tom for helping them in their career path, “Tom has a deep knowledge & expertise in pharmaceutical medical affairs & it’s on display in this podcast. Impactful speakers & compelling content for MSL leaders – as well as MSL individual contributors. Thanks, Tom for providing a resource to offer a hand up in the evolution of our business.”
