Tiger Woods Returns To Competitive Golf At 2023 Hero World Challenge, Showing Signs Of Rustiness

Tiger Woods made a rusty return to competitive golf at the 2023 Hero World Challenge, his first since April. However, the 15-time major champion showcased signs of rust while opening 18 holes at Albany in the Bahamas while finishing with a 3-over 75.

Woods, a five-time winner and five-time runner-up at the Hero, currently holds 18th out of 20 players in this unofficial event that supports his TGR Foundation.

Tiger Woods, the golf legend, made his much-anticipated rusty return to professional golf at the Hero World Challenge. It has marked his first appearance since withdrawing from the Masters in April. The results were a mixed bag of antique radiance and signs of rust as Woods navigated the Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas during the opening round.

Woods, known for his trademark clarity, started strong with a solid opening shot right down the middle of the fairway, showcasing his old magic. However, throughout the round, a noticeable slack accompanied him, reflecting his ongoing challenges.

Despite flashes of brilliance, such as a remarkably long putt at the 11th hole, Woods faced setbacks. On the 15th hole, he struggled to escape from a bush, resulting in a double-bogey. A late stumble caused him to falter on the next two holes, finishing the round at 75, three strokes over par. This performance placed him 18th out of 20 competitors, according to Ny Daily Trends.

In a broadcast interview, Woods acknowledged the inability, saying, “I was rusty. I didn’t have my feelings. Went sideways at the end.” He highlighted the unfamiliar crush as he continued to recover from ankle blend surgery earlier in the year.

Tiger Woods’s performance on the track was inconsistent, with every positive move followed by a setback. Despite securing fowl on holes 3, 5, and 11, he quickly countered them with bogeys on 4, 6, and 12. The round changed direction for the worse after a birdie on the 14th, as Woods struggled, resulting in a double bogey on the 15th, with additional bogeys on 16 and 17. A tap-in par on the 18th made some relief, concluding his return round.

In a post-round interview, Woods admitted, “I hit many shots. I was rusty, I didn’t have my feels, and conditions were hard early. I hung through there and didn’t finish my round the way I needed to, and consequently, it kind of went sideways at the end.”

Throughout the day, Woods hit six out of 10 golfs, reached 10 of 18 greens in regulation, and required 30 putts.

Tony Finau and Brian Harman, both opening with impressive 5-under 67s, currently lead the ranking of competitive golf. Jordan Spieth followed in solo third place after a rollercoaster round featuring two eagles and five pars.

Reflecting on his performance, Spieth commented, “Some rusty putting, a couple of the balls, and then a lot of really good stuff. So, I would have probably signed for four under when I was warming up today; I didn’t think I’d get there this way.”

Two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland shot a 1-over 73, placing him in solo 16th position. As the Hero World Challenge unfolds, golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate whether Woods can shake off the rust and regain his competitive edge.

As Tiger Woods navigates his way back into the competitive golfing arena, the golfing world watches with rusty return. They were eager to witness the legendary figure overcome challenges and add new chapters to his storied career.
