In a high-stakes face-off on the night of November 30, U.S. presidential candidate Ron DeSantis and California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom got involved in a fiery debate.
In the Newsom DeSantis debate, DeSantis aimed to convince Republican voters that he is the strongest contestant to take on President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and California Governor Gavin Newsom engaged in a two-hour debate. The conversation covered various topics, providing a peek into a potential 2028 matchup. The Newsom DeSantis debate was titled “The Great Red vs. Blue State Debate” by some news. It focused on their contrasting leadership styles in two of the country’s largest states, with minimal reference to the ongoing presidential primaries.
Opening the discussion, Newsom acknowledged their thorough differences but highlighted that neither would be their party’s nominee in 2024. DeSantis did not dispute this assertion.
During the DeSantis-Newson debate, the exchange quickly turned bitter, with DeSantis repeatedly labelling Gavin Newsom as a liar responsible for a failing state. At the same time, Newsom mocked his Florida peer as a bully dangling behind Republican presidential rival Donald Trump in polls.
Newsom took a jab at DeSantis, suggesting he should step aside to give Nikki Haley a chance against Trump. In response, DeSantis, 45, replied, “You wish.”
The Newsom DeSantis debate, held six weeks before the Iowa caucuses, featured spirited exchanges on taxes, education, abortion, energy, immigration, Covid-19, and crime policies. Both governors warned of the disastrous consequences if their opponent’s approach was approved nationwide.
Once considered Trump’s main challenger, DeSantis now lags over 40 points behind Trump in the race for the Republican White House nomination. Attention has shifted to Haley, the former South Carolina governor, gaining tension in some polls as the leading Trump alternative.
During the debate, DeSantis criticised Gavin Newsom’s leadership, describing him as a “slick, slippery politician” directing a failing state, leading to a mass exit of people from California.
To emphasise his point about California’s governance, DeSantis presented a map in the Newsom DeSantis debate, depicting the alleged quantity of human faeces found on the streets of San Francisco.
Despite holding his own in the debate, DeSantis faces challenges restoring his struggling campaign. In an email to supporters before the debate, the Trump campaign dismissed it as a “desperate” attempt to regain attention amid internal conflicts and strategic shifts.
Republican strategist John Feehery acknowledged the debate as an opportunity for DeSantis to showcase his conventional governance in Florida. However, he doubted it would significantly alter the track of the Republican nominating race, depicting Newsom’s polished debating skills.
While DeSantis’ aides theorise that Newsom could be a presidential contender soon, Gavin Newsom has promised support for Biden’s candidacy. In the debate, Newsom reaffirmed his endorsement of Biden, stating, “I will take Joe Biden at 100 versus Ron DeSantis any day of the week at any age,” when questioned about Biden’s age.
The discussion in the Newson DeSantis debate also delved into the controversial issue of abortion, with Newsom criticising DeSantis’s six-week abortion ban in Florida as “extreme.” DeSantis, in response, asserted his belief in a “culture of life.”
Looking ahead, DeSantis is scheduled to meet his Republican rivals in Alabama for their fourth debate, with the Republican nominating contest inaugurated in Iowa on January 15. The Newsom DeSantis debate showcased the challenges DeSantis faces in stimulating his campaign and gaining ground in the competitive political landscape.
