4 Proven Ways to Quell the Overwhelm & Successfully Navigate the College Admissions Journey

In today’s DIY world fueled by YouTube Videos, TikTok, and more, why hire a plumber when you can fix your own sink?  That may work okay for plumbers but navigating the labyrinth that is the college admissions process requires a more nuanced approach backed by experience, expertise, and a guiding hand.
Students – and their parents – want a successful, low-stress outcome: a prominent university that’s the right fit.  With multiple applications, each with their own idiosyncrasies, even the most organized and driven students are bound to become overwhelmed as they move through the college admissions preparation process during high school. There is no bad time to find the right fit when it comes to admissions gurus.

Throughout my professional journey, I have helped students transform their anxiety into confidence by cutting through the clutter and clatter to provide valuable and relevant guidance.

If you aim to unleash your potential and unlock success in the college admissions process, here’s how to go about it:

Get Started & Stay the Course

Starting with 9th grade, everything counts for your future college applications so it is never too early to get started. Top applicants are intentional in their decision making. They plot out their curriculum and extracurricular activities that align with their interests, strengths and aspirations. In other words, don’t sit back and wait for college to happen to you, go out and make it happen!

Select opportunities that will contribute to your learning objectives and personal growth, both in and out of the classroom.

 Pursue extracurricular activities
Active high-quality participation in extracurriculars and summer enrichment programs are a critical factor in any successful admission process. These are going to be key inputs to the stories you tell through your applications. Take some time to identify your passion, interests, and unique qualities and search for opportunities where you will be motivated to do a deep dive that will demonstrate your potential and help you stand out.

Your eagerness to embrace new challenges will not only showcase your problem solving skills, adaptability and growth mindset, among other characteristics, but also begin to set you apart from others.

Write your application essays
When it comes time to write your various college application essays, great essays showcase your character, personal growth, values, goals and why you will be an excellent fit for their program. Every student has the ability to succeed, it is tapping into your experiences and expressing them at a meaningful level that may be the most challenging.

Find a dedicated counselor
Mitigating the stress and overwhelm will come from finding an experienced and dedicated counselor who will help you navigate through the admissions process and achieve your goals. A coherent schedule and a well-structured roadmap is needed to maintain efficient preparations.

With experienced guidance, you can gain clarity throughout your admissions journey regardless of where you are in the process. Your counselor will help you understand the nuances of different admissions criteria, and help you make informed decisions that align with your aspirations.

It is crucial to get some expert guidance and support to be able to navigate the admissions maze successfully.
