Megan Rapinoe Suffers Injury In Final Soccer Match Of Her Legendary Career

Under heartbreaking circumstances, U.S. soccer icon Megan Rapinoe sustained an injury. The unfortunate event happened minutes into the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) final on Saturday, marking an unhappy end to her distinguished career.

If we talk about Megan Rapione’s age, the 38-year-old star had previously announced her retirement plans. She faced a non-contact injury in the third minute of the match, leading to her substitution. With the help of the training staff, Megan Rapinoe limped away from the field, watching from the sidelines as her team, OL Reign, fell 2-1 to Gotham FC.

Soccer legend Megan Rapinoe concluded her illustrious professional career on Saturday night in the amalgam of events. It resulted in an unexpected injury during the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Championship match in San Diego.

The OL Reign’s midfielder had announced her retirement over the summer. Megan Rapinoe remained a two-time World Cup winner and prominent advocate for social causes.

However, the match took an unexpected turn in the third minute when Rapinoe suffered an injury that ended her final game prematurely while defending against Gotham FC’s Maitane Lopez. The incident occurred as she detached Lopez, causing Rapinoe to plant her foot awkwardly and fall. Despite medical personnel’s efforts, Rapinoe could not continue and left the field without help. The OL Reign ultimately lost the match 2-1 to Gotham FC.

Gotham’s Lynn Williams scored the game’s first goal just 20 minutes after Rapinoe’s departure, with Reign’s Rose Lavelle responding shortly after. However, Gotham’s Esther González sealed the victory with another goal in the final minutes of the first half.

As Rapinoe bid farewell to professional soccer, she did so alongside another U.S. Women’s National Team stalwart, Ali Krieger of Gotham FC, who also played her final professional match on the same night. The two players, crucial in securing World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019, shared an emotional moment as Krieger embraced Rapinoe on the field.

Megan Rapinoe’s career spans four World Cup appearances and four Olympic campaigns. She achieved two World Cup trophies and Olympic gold and bronze medals. In the 2019 World Cup, Rapinoe earned the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards as the tournament’s best player and top scorer, gaining global acknowledgment for her talent. Megan Rapione’s net worth is around $5 million.

Outside the field, Rapinoe fleeced her platform to champion various social causes, including Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ rights, and women’s equality. Her advocacy, often interwoven with public conflicts with former President Donald Trump, earned her the title of a “walking protest.” Rapinoe played a pivotal role in the push for equal pay among men and women on the U.S. Soccer national team, ending in a historic collective negotiation agreement last year.

Beyond her sporting achievements, Megan Rapinoe received tributes such as the 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin and Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year. She has achieved the 2019 FIFA award for the world’s best female player. Megan Rapinoe was also honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year.

Megan Rapinoe’s influence extends beyond soccer, as evidenced by her inclusion in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2020. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Biden in 2022.

As Megan Rapinoe exits the soccer stage, her legacy endures in her on-field skill. She also maintained her determined commitment to social justice and equality.
